Here at HeelFeet we aim to help with all foot problems. Below are a few of the most common encountered and a little detail about the treatment we provide.
Nails
Nails can be difficult to cut due to mobility problems such as arthritis and back problems. However they can be unmanageable as they become thickened or brittle.
Nails will be cut back, cleared and filed but can be reduced with the aid of a drill, if necessary.
Corns and Callus
Corns and Callus are areas of thickened skin due to repeated pressure or friction. It is the body’s way of protecting underlying structures from damage.
Callus (hard skin) is an extended area of thickened skin. When pressure becomes excessive, it usually results in a corn. Causes include inappropriate footwear, prominent bones or gait abnormalities.
Treatment involves debriding the callus or enucleating the corn, then helping address the underlying cause.
Ingrown Toenail
These occur when a piece of nail pierces the skin causing pain and discomfort. It generally affects the big toe nail. Main causes include trauma and poor nail cutting. If it is left untreated It can become infected with blood and pus present.
Treatment varies depending on the severity of the condition. Some cases require conservative management by removing the spicule of nail, advice on nail care and cutting techniques. In a minority of cases where there are recurrent infections nail surgery may be required.
